BOOK CLUB RECORDS
Sick of having to constantly order their
favourite records from abroad, Nick Coppack
and Victoria Hannan established Book Club
Records in January 2005. With a strong focus
on jangly/twee pop produced in bedrooms
and home studios, their mail-order shop
(www.bookclubrecords.com) stocks indie pop
from around the world, including releases
from labels such as Matinee, Unpopular and
Magic Marker.
But they also want to raise awareness of
independent pop music here in Brisbane and
encourage people to make it themselves,
or at least be open about enjoying it. They
say music doesn't have to be written in
complex time signatures or produced by Steve
Albini to be any good.
In March, Book Club issued a CD-R sampler
(Pop, Scissors, Paper) featuring nine Brisbane
bands and four of these acts – The
Zebras, Delpino, Greg Brady & The Anchors,
Special Branch – will plug in at The
Troubadour to perform at the label’s
official launch next week. There’ll
also be an art/photography exhibition, cup
cakes and a free label sampler (Foreign
Exchange) for the first 25 payers.
There are other projects in the works, including
a compilation featuring husband-and-wife
pop combinations and a possible series of
split EPs featuring local songwriters.
In the meantime, let the folks at Book Club
guide you through a snapshot of the label’s
most attractive offerings!
The Lovekevins – Blame the English
7”
We tell everyone this is the jewel in Book
Club’s crown. It’s been described
by others as “twee Pavement”
and we love it so much.
The Lucksmiths – T-Shirt Weather 7”
This is just one of three rare Lucksmiths
records we stock. Undoubtedly Australian
pop royalty, their jangly, catchy pop tunes
are some of the world’s finest. This
tune in particular epitomises the essence
of pop music.
Jens Lekman – Oh You’re So Silent
Jens
Jens Lekman recently warmed hearts all
over Australia. This Swede is such a talented
and charismatic performer and his songs
are so sweet. This compilation bundles together
tracks from some of his early releases that
are impossible to get hold of in Australia.
Pipas – A Cat Escaped
Pipas are Lupe Nuñez-Fernandez
and Mark Powell. They’re based in
London and write some of the cutest, sweetest,
most danceable pop songs you’ll ever
hear.
Sprites – Bionic Hands EP
Former Barcelona singer Jason Korzen
now fronts jangle-pop act Sprites. With
wife Amy by his side, this is sweet music
that rings with melody.
Strip Squad – Just Obey EP
Strip Squad are students from Malmo,
a university town in Sweden’s south.
With hand claps and lots of voices, this
debut EP is so much fun. It’s a really
limited release, too!
Tullycraft – Disenchanted Hearts
Unite
This is the fourth album from Seattle
cuddlecore act Tullycraft. Imagine twee
punk and this is it. Catchy as hell, but
also energetic and urgent.
The Book Club Records launch, featuring
The Zebras, Delpino, Greg Brady & The
Anchors and Special Branch, is at The Troubadour
Wednesday June 29. Visit Book Club online
